SUMMARY:The Impact of Incarcerated Parents on Children
DESCRIPTION:Incarceration is a factor that greatly impacts our community but isn’t widely talked about; especially the impact it has on dependent children. Children are often ignored\, voiceless and not necessarily seen as having rights when it comes to their own well being or their parent’s situation. \nThis presentation will delve into the rights children have\, as well as resources and supports that can be used to help children have a safe\, stable\, and nurturing environment in the circumstance of an incarcerated parent. \nThis presentation will be held at the Center for Urban Families and will be facilitated by Eliza Cooper. Through her business Live Holistically Balanced and as a Community Anchor she partners with community organizations to provide Holistic Health education\, relationship and community engagement classes\, workshops and events. \nEliza is a member of the Steering Committee for Baltimore City’s Thriving Communities Collaborative\, Maryland Parent Leadership Team at the Family Tree of Maryland\, an Adult Organizational Volunteer for University of Maryland Extension Baltimore City 4-H Youth Development program and an alumnus of the FRIENDS National Center for Community Based Child Abuse Prevention Parent Advisory Council.

SUMMARY:Breaking Trauma's Grasp Through Collective Action
DESCRIPTION:The Thriving Communities Collaborative is excited to welcome back Naketta Lowery\, CFLE of Sustainable Life Solutions and The Family Tree to lead us in exploring how we can collectively act to help break trauma’s grip on our communities. She will follow up on her previous discussion  with the presentation\, “Balancing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) with Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE).” \nWith the abundance of research studies & conversation focused on childhood trauma & adversity\, it can be challenging to shift our thinking to things we can do to collectively add to the “solutions pot”. In balancing ACES with HOPE\, we explore the importance of hope & optimism by delving into 3 key social structures that include building individual and community capabilities\, understanding & building healthy attachment & belonging\, & incorporating culture & spirituality into our daily resilience practices. During our time together\, we will use the information shared to develop daily practices that spread HOPE & build resilience in the lives of children\, families\, & communities. \nWe hope you will join us. \nRSVP on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:DNA Is Not Destiny - Breaking Down Biological Obstacles to Success
DESCRIPTION:As a follow-up to our  February and March events\, we will be screening DNA is Not Destiny\, one of the films from the Raising of America series produced by California Newsreel. This film will build upon and reinforce concepts raised at TCC’s March event\, highlighting the fact that everything in a child’s environment including diet\, environmental toxins\, safety\, housing\, and parental stress can impact long-term chances for success in life.\n\nAs we prepare for the Marland primary elections\, this film highlights several issues you can review with candidates.\n\nIf you haven’t had a chance to see this film\, save the date and join us for the screening and discussion.  Our discussion will be led by Dr. Michele Solloway. Dr. Solloway has worked as a health services researcher for over 20 years\, focusing on children’s health\, vulnerable populations\, health reform\, federal and state health policy\, health professions training and education\, and most recently integrative medicine and trauma-informed care. Dr. Solloway has conducted research\, program implementation and program evaluations in academic\, government\, social services and not-for-profit settings. She has also consulted widely for a number of state\, philanthropic\, and community organizations. Dr. Solloway received her PhD from UC Berkeley\, Department of City and Regional Planning\, her Masters of Public Administration from San Francisco State University and her Bachelor degree in Neurobiology from UC Berkeley.\n\nDNA is Not Destiny: Breaking Down Biological Obstacles to Success\nMonday\, April 23\, 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM\nWhere:  Center for Urban Families\, Baltimore\n\nRSVP

SUMMARY:From Whippin' to Coffin: Inside the Brains of Traumatized Children
DESCRIPTION:What happens to the brains of children exposed to high levels of abuse\, neglect\, and household dysfunction? What is it that shortens their “fuse\,” makes “typical” tasks difficult\, and potentially shortens their lifespan?  And\, more importantly\, what can we\, as a community\, do about it? \nWe will dive into how stress (that we have difficulty coping with) changes our brains to allow us to survive. We’ll explore the science of epigenetics and how what happens to us can turn genes on and off. And lastly\, we will examine how we as a community can help one another by building self-healing\, resilient communities. \nOur discussion will be led by Naketta Lowery; she serves as the  ACE* Interface Trainer from the Family Tree and she also leads a non-profit\, Sustainable Life Solutions which is focused on housing youth transitioning out of foster care. \nWe hope you’ll join us.  This event is free and open to the public. \nIf you had a chance to join us for our two events earlier this year\, Racism and Trauma and the screening of Resilience – The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope\, you may find this particularly helpful in further understanding the concepts we discussed. \nPlease register at Eventbrite. \nRSVP\nNote:  ACE is short for Adverse Childhood Experiences

SUMMARY:Resilience - The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope
DESCRIPTION:Join the TCC for a screening of RESILIENCE: THE BIOLOGY OF STRESS & THE SCIENCE OF HOPE. \nAs we move further into 2018\, the necessity for solutions to combat the trauma experienced by so many deepens. \nBuilding upon our last “Racism and Trauma” event\, the TCC is excited to screen the film RESILIENCE\, a one-hour documentary that explores the science of childhood trauma and toxic stress\, how it impacts us and how we can heal from it.  As healthcare providers embrace the brain science pointing to effective strategies for disrupting the cycles of violence\, addiction\, and disease that plague our communities\, the importance of sharing this knowledge broadly grows. \n“The child may not remember\, but the body remembers.” \nThis award-winning film will be followed by a discussion with a focus on strategies for building Resilience in our own communities. \nRegister on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Racism and Trauma - An Encore Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The TCC is kicking off the year with an encore presentation of an event we held last year\, Racism and Trauma:  How Does Racism Get Under Our Skin.  There was a lot of interest in this event\, so we’ll be holding it in the evening so that more people can attend.\n\nWhen the original ACES study was done\, racism wasn’t one of the adverse experiences identified as the population studied was only 5% black. However\, when the Philadelphia ACES study was done\, they found that over one-third (34.5%) of adults reported experiencing discrimination based on their race or ethnicity. How does racism impact health outcomes?\n\nAt this January\, TCC event we’ll use the film: UNNATURAL CAUSES: When the Bough Breaks\, as a launching pad for a discussion of Racism and Trauma.  The film explores birth outcomes\, factoring in economics and education.  We hope you’ll join us for the discussion.\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\nAll who share our vision and mission are welcome to attend this FREE EVENT.

SUMMARY:Stronger Connected - 2nd Annual Community Networking Event
DESCRIPTION:This December\, it will be three years since the Thriving Communities Collaborative (TCC) first met to talk about how trauma is impacting our lives. Since that time so much has happened\, Freddie Gray\, the escalation of the opioid epidemic\, a new administration in Baltimore and the nation\, and so much more.\nDuring that same time\, many people have learned how trauma impacts our body and our brain making us more vulnerable to many mental and physical ailments. We’ve also learned that we are strengthened by positive connections with others.\nThis invites you to the TCC’s “Stronger Connected – 2nd Annual Community Networking Event”. This FREE networking event is focused on strengthening connections between people who believe all communities in Baltimore have the right to thrive.\nTo realize thriving communities\, we have to work together with all stakeholders involved and really get to know each other. For those making the efforts\, we know it requires dedication\, flexibility\, real connections and love for the people we work with. Come out to our informal get-together and reflect on the collective journey we are all on.\nWe have a fun evening planned with hors d’oeuvres and beverages\, so don’t worry if you don’t have a chance to grab dinner. Bring a friend! Enjoy a great summer evening gathering!

SUMMARY:October TCC General Meeting - Epigenetics and the Brain Science of Trauma - A Double Edged Sword
DESCRIPTION:For people suffering from the effects of chronic exposure to trauma\, learning about the brain science of trauma can be eye-opening. Suddenly\, it becomes clear why you behave the way you do; you can finally understand. But\, at the same time many\, particularly teens and adults wonder\, “Can I be fixed? Will I always be this way?” At our October general meeting\, we’ll examine these issues\, digging further into the epigenetics & brain science of trauma with a short 37-minute film from the Raising of America series\, DNA is not Destiny. Afterward\, we’ll have a panel explore how to use this information to build resilience and avoid feelings of hopelessness. \nPlease note.  All who share our vision and mission are welcome to attend. \nRSVP Today
