SUMMARY:The Irrefutable Link Between High-Quality Childcare & Thriving Communities
DESCRIPTION:Over the past few years\, the Thriving Communities Collaborative (TCC) has examined some of the factors necessary to prevent childhood trauma and build and sustain thriving\, resilient communities. So many things are intertwined. You can’t just deal with part of the problem. And so\, this month\, we’ve chosen to focus on High-Quality Childcare. \nHaving access to high-quality child care enables parents and families to work\, pursue advanced education\, experience less stress — so many of the factors that help to prevent childhood trauma and support strong communities. At the May meeting\, we’ll\, dive into this and review: \n\nThe Evidence Supporting High-Quality Childcare – We will view the 30-minute film from the Raising of America Series\, “Are We Crazy About Our Kids” and discuss the implications.\nWhere We stand in Baltimore & Maryland – Nancy Pelton\, Acting Director of Training and Technical Assistance of the Baltimore City Child Care Resource Center will share information on how we are doing.\nSpecific Actions We Can Take to Make a Difference – We’ll talk about specific actions we can take to make a difference.\n\nWe hope you’ll join us for this important viewing and discussion: \nFriday\, May 19\, 2017\n9:30 AM to 11:30 AM (9:30 to 9:45 Networking)\nCenter for Urban Families\n2201 North Monroe Street\,\nBaltimore\, MD 21201 \nPlease Note: All who share our Vision and Mission are welcome to attend. SUMMARY:Racism & Trauma: How Does Racism Get Under Our Skin?
DESCRIPTION:How exactly does racism “get under our skin?” How does something like racism factor in when we look at health outcomes? When the original ACES study was done\, racism wasn’t one of the adverse experiences identified as the population studied was only 5% black. However\, when the Philadelphia Expanded ACES study was done\, they found that over one-third (34.5%) of adults reported experiencing discrimination based on their race or ethnicity. \nAt the March TCC General Meeting\, we’ll use the film: UNNATURAL CAUSES: When the Bough Breaks as a launching pad for a discussion of racism and trauma.  The film explores birth outcomes\, factoring in economics and education.  We hope you’ll join us for the discussion.  Our panelist include: \nYolanda Ogbolu\, Ph.D. CRNP-Neonatal\nFNAP Assistant Professor Director\, Office of Global Health Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Nurse Faculty Scholar University of Maryland School of Nursing \nJan Desper Peters\, MPA\,\nExecutive Director Black Mental Health Alliance \nJoin us:\nFriday\, March 17\, 2017\n9:30AM to 11:30AM\nCenter for Urban Families\n2201 North Monroe Street\, Baltimore\, MD 212017 \nPlease note. All who share our vision and mission are welcome to attend. \nPlease RSVP using the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n * indicates required field\n\n\n\n\n \n \n First Name:*\n \n \n \n \n \n Last Name:*\n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n Email:*\n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n CAPTCHA Code:*

SUMMARY:October TCC General Meeting - Epigenetics and the Brain Science of Trauma - A Double Edged Sword
DESCRIPTION:For people suffering from the effects of chronic exposure to trauma\, learning about the brain science of trauma can be eye-opening. Suddenly\, it becomes clear why you behave the way you do; you can finally understand. But\, at the same time many\, particularly teens and adults wonder\, “Can I be fixed? Will I always be this way?” At our October general meeting\, we’ll examine these issues\, digging further into the epigenetics & brain science of trauma with a short 37-minute film from the Raising of America series\, DNA is not Destiny. Afterward\, we’ll have a panel explore how to use this information to build resilience and avoid feelings of hopelessness. \nPlease note.  All who share our vision and mission are welcome to attend. \nRSVP Today
